Introduction

Ankle Sprains and Fractures have similar causes and can be caused by twisting or rolling the ankle during an acute injury such as a car accident or sports mishap, or by wear-and-tear and overuse.A sprained ankle, also known as a twisted ankle, or rolled ankle is an injury where sprain occurs on one or more ligaments of the ankle.An ankle fracture is a break of one or more ankle bones. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, bruising, and an inability to walk on the leg. Complications may include an associated high ankle sprain, compartment syndrome, decreased range of motion, and malunion. The cause may include excessive stress on the joint such as from rolling an ankle or blunt trauma. Types include lateral malleolus, medial malleolus, posterior malleolus, bimalleolar, and trimalleolar fractures. The need for X-rays may be determined by the Ottawa ankle rule.
